Writerly Career Map

Writerly Career Map
November 2009

An imaginative text-based map for readers and writers. Exuberant hand drawn type unfolds into word games and gestalt "ah ha!" moments, inviting playful readings and re-readings.

Mapping a writerly life, a life of make-believe from ambition to delusion, the poster aims at young writers who may not know about their chance to get published with the Hart House Review. It situates the journal’s call for submissions within a career path, while poking fun at the ambition/delusion behind these lofty goals.

2,000 copies were distributed around the University of Toronto campus, on walls and in nearby stacks, as an invitation for students to take their own copy, post it up in their dorm rooms, and get lost in the illustration’s wandering pathways before diving off into their own writing.

Honoured as a finalist in Design Edge Canada’s Regional Design Awards 2010.

Specs: Newsprint, 34" × 22" (avail. as 8.5" × 11" 1/4 folds).

Not a catalogue of style.

My practice is a process of visual problem solving, an attempt to fully realize and communicate messages graphically.

It’s not a typeface or a colour palette, not a rehashing of contemporary trends or a favourite era in design’s history.

The look and feel (style) of my work is always searching, looking forward and backward for better ways to say things to people.

What is a ‘faunt’?

Faunt is David Owen Morgan, freelance illustrator, graphic designer, design consultant, writer, hand-holder and leader. I graduated from the University of Toronto in 2007. I have been working in design ever since.
